This is what cgi really does.

The principle is simple: CGI transform 3D construction data (i.e. CATIA and Unigraphics) into photo realilstic images - in the computer. Actual implementation is harder.
Computer generated imagery originated in the film industry: »Jurassic Park« was not the first movie to employ CGI, but its spectacular effects where groundbraking
Then there were technical constraints in CGI: even the fastest (and most expensive) computers took long to »render« - transform 3D data into a two-dimensional image. It was time-consuming and costly. With moving images the slight defects in individual frame (24 per second) were hardly noticeable. But with stills for print media publication even the tiniest snag matters visibly. No wonder art photographers and directors used to be sceptical.
Computing speeds and reproduction quality have now increased enormously, leading to big cost reductions.
Now not only professional photographers and art directors can benefit from cgi to obtain superb images. And CGI's cost-effectiveness should be evident to every controller, too.
